A Real Homeowner’s Story

About this Project

After a major hurricane surge destroyed a waterfront home along Lemon Bay in Englewood, Florida, the homeowner had to decide whether to move on from the property or rebuild.

They chose to rebuild — but with a very different approach.

The new home would be elevated roughly above mean high sea level and designed to better handle the realities of coastal storms.

P.A.M. Construction was brought in to complete the structural concrete work that anchors the new home.

The Structural Challenge

Building along the sandy Lemon Bay comes with unique challenges. Because of the extensive hurricane damage throughout the region, Sarasota County implemented much stricter building requirements for coastal reconstruction.

The engineering plan called for:

  • Deep reinforced concrete footers
  • Large independent foundation bases
  • Structural concrete piers supporting the elevated structure
  • Reinforced steel rebar connections tying the entire system together
  • Each column supporting the home required its own large engineered footer.

In total, the home is supported by 20 reinforced concrete posts that transfer the load of the elevated structure down into deep footers beneath the sand. Much of this work isn’t visible once construction is complete, but it’s what gives the home its long-term strength.

Building in Challenging Conditions

Constructing the foundation came with additional complications.

The building permits were approved during the rainy season, which meant the team had to excavate and pour concrete in saturated sand conditions with a rising water table.

The construction team had to adapt quickly. To complete the work successfully, crews pumped water out of the holes and stabilized the forms before each concrete pour.

Despite the conditions, the team maintained steady progress.

Throughout the process, communication remained consistent with the client. Even with weather and site challenges, the project stayed on schedule.

What Homeowners Can Expect

For coastal homeowners rebuilding after hurricane damage, a strong foundation is the first and most important step.

Projects like Frank’s often require:

  • Deep engineered footers
  • Reinforced concrete piers
  • Careful excavation in sandy soil
  • Close coordination with local inspectors and engineers

With the right planning and experienced construction team, it’s possible to build homes that are significantly more resilient to future storms.

As Frank’s project demonstrates, the goal isn’t just rebuilding — it’s rebuilding stronger and smarter than before.

The Finished Result

Today the home stands elevated on a grid of reinforced concrete columns anchored to deep engineered footers beneath the surface.

The foundation system was designed to exceed current storm-resistance requirements and provide a stable base for the elevated structure above. For waterfront homes like this one, getting the foundation right is one of the most important steps in creating a house built to last.

If you’re planning a coastal rebuild or need a reinforced foundation for a new construction project, working with experienced structural concrete specialists can make all the difference.
